Bed and Breakfast To Go

Do You Sleep in That?

It’s amazing how often we hear that. Yes, we do. Our little teardrop has a full size bed, it’s a memory foam mattress. It’s just as comfortable as our bed at home! No more hard ground with a thin little pad under us.

It seems that every trip we go on people come up to us who have never seen the inside of a teardrop.

People are always curious about our teardrop. We will be at a rest stop, gas station, vista site and someone makes a beeline for us and starts asking questions.
We’ll show them the bed, the kitchen, we always get “how cute”, “wow”, “there is more room than we thought”, “great idea”. Then the questions start.

Where did you get it? How much does it cost?
Since Randy is a general contractor and cabinet maker, he designed and built the whole teardrop. We even had our son weld up the frame which then got powder coated a deep burgundy red. (So worth the extra cost, it looks great and protects the frame from rusting!) If you don’t want to build your own, many teardrop builders will customize one for you or you could buy one right off the lot!

How long did it take you?
Design and build took 3 months. Randy worked on it after work and on weekends. We had rented a teardrop trailer for a 10 day anniversary camping trip, fell in love and started the design for this teardrop the day after we came home.

What does it weigh? Can I pull it with our Subaru?
We were actually asked this question by a couple from San Francisco who were driving a Subaru identical to ours! It weights about 1180 pounds, with all our stuff I’m guessing it comes in at 1400 pounds. One of these days we’ll get it weighed and have an exact number. We balanced the weight on the axel so it pulls easy and straight. We’ve had her up to 70+mph and forgot she was there!

How long have you had it?
5 years. It only looks new because we park it in the garage- an advantage of a small teardrop!

You could go in the business of making these!
Randy wants to build another one or two, but not as a business. It takes the fun out of building them when it becomes a job.

How do you get dressed?
Getting dressed keeps us limber. Yes, we get dressed while lying down on top of the bed. Sometimes, if no one is around, we can slip our pants on while standing outside the door. You can always put up a pop up changing tent for those who prefer not to practice yoga when dressing.

Do you get claustrophobic in there?
We don’t! Our teardrop has plenty of head room, a skylight fan, each door has an openable window. We like to think of it as cozy, not cramped.

So, can you think of any other questions? Let us know if you buy or build one or perhaps already own a teardrop and what your experiences are. We would love to hear from you!
